The Art Station - Big Shanty was built in 1943 as a summer home for the Rooker family, but eventually it became their permanant home. Originally located where Kennesaw Mountain High School now stands, the house was moved and (over a two year period) transformed into the arts center we have today. With two multi-media classrooms, a black-and-white photography darkroom, a pottery studio, meeting space and a gallery, this creative facility is an excellent addition to the Cobb County Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department. Programming includes classes and workshops in the visual, performing, and literary arts during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters; visual, dance and theater camps for children during the Summer quarter; and exhibitions and meeting space for arts-related activities year-round. The front gallery usually features work by our teachers, most of whom are local artists. The back gallery houses our main exhibits, which rotate monthly and feature a variety of artists and media. The Art Station is also home to Guiermo, a massive bug-eyed Black Moor goldfish who entertains visitors by routinely spitting the rocks in his tank against the glass. (In the last eight months, he has mysteriously changed color from all black with silver accents to silver with gold and black accents. We're very amused.) He lives in the restroom, but don't worry; he's mostly blind, so he usually doesn't spy on folks. Guiermo enjoys eating protein "noodles," sleeping in the far corner of his tank, and showing off his frilly fins for the kids. | |||||||
